Lawn Care

Mowing: On a weekly and bi-weekly basis, we tend lawns with appropriate and well-maintained equipment and properly trained staff. This service includes mowing and trimming of all grass areas as well as edging along driveways, concrete walks, patios, and other obstacles

—and we always thoroughly clean up any clippings we cause. Special care is taken to ensure proper mowing and trimming height so turf grows healthy and green. Employees ensure the machines are operated with care and that the property is free of ruts and tire marks. When we are finished, our customers’ lawns have that “professional striped look”— just like your favorite baseball stadium.

Landscaping

Mulching: The quickest way to make a landscaping bed come to life is with a fresh coating of mulch. Mulch also helps keep the moisture in the soil, keeping plants healthy. Depending on customer preference, between the end of April and early June, a fresh layer of mulch is added to the beds at our accounts. Attention to detail is very important in order to spread an even layer across the entire bed and around all plants. After the mulch has been spread, we use backpack blowers to clean the edges of the beds.

Planting: A variety of greenhouses in the Traverse City area grow most of our customers’ desired plants. With time, an assortment of plants can be grown in a fresh landscape, or perhaps, new ones can be planted to replace a dying shrub. We consider ourselves an adaptable and versatile company. In the past, we have done everything from planting flowers along sidewalks to replacing 15-foot trees. The equipment necessary for this service is basic: shovels and manpower.

Pruning: Typically, the month of July is dedicated to pruning shrubs and small trees; our average customer feels that mid-summer is the best time to have their shrubs looking perfectly neat and trimmed. Knowledge of the specific types of plants is critical in doing a great pruning job. For example, some flowering plants are not pruned until late fall or even the next spring to ensure that flowers are enjoyed all year. Customer input is always welcome, some people may prefer more privacy—they want plants surrounding their property to grow large before they are pruned. Additionally, an important aspect of professional pruning is in the cleanup of the excess trimmings. We ensure that all cut debris is removed from the shrub itself and the ground surrounding it. All edges are blown before the pruning job is complete. Apart from the newly-shaped shrubs, the goal is to seem as if we were never there.

Irrigation Start-Up & Repair: The single most important aspect of a healthy lawn is a fully functional and timed Irrigation System. Every spring, irrigation systems must be turned on and checked for damage. Additionally, all sprinkler heads must be checked for damage and tested to see that they are watering evenly. A watchful eye during the summer is crucial to detect irrigation problems. Browned grass or “dry spots” are telltale signs of irrigation issues and must be corrected quickly. We must also be aware of overly saturated areas, as they can help us find seeping sprinkler heads or leaking lines. Sometime before the winter officially sets in, the irrigation lines must be blown out with compressed air so that there is no excess water that could freeze, causing them to burst.

Spring & Fall Cleanups: Spring and fall cleanups go hand-in-hand. Fall cleanups usually start roughly mid-October—the time varies depending on when the majority of leaves drop from the trees. The goal of a fall cleanup is to remove all leaves as efficiently as possible. Leaves are blown out of beds; they are either raked onto tarps and removed or blown past a tree-line out of sight. Removing the bulk of the leaves helps create an easier spring cleanup. The spring cleanup is a very important start to the landscaping season. Going above and beyond is noticeable when comparing with other properties that have suffered the winter damage. The remaining leaves are blown out of beds, dead perennial growth is cut and removed, and any sticks or debris are removed from the lawn or flower beds. Additionally, any damage from the previous winter's plowing is leveled and seeded. The lawn is de-thatched thoroughly; the thatch and debris is moved with backpack blowers so it can be swept or raked onto tarps and removed from the property. All bed edges, curbs, etc. are blown to achieve a clean look.

Plowing & Snow Removal

Plowing & Snow Removal: Due to the physical and mental demands of working long and sometimes obscure hours, plowing requires a focus and commitment unlike that of summer-time landscaping. The plowing season can start as early as October and last until the end of April. Marking all curbs and obstacles with plow stakes before the first snow is essential. In order to work at maximum efficiency, methods and processes are necessary.

In order to work at maximum efficiency, methods and processes are necessary. For example, when we reach a job, the employee driving the pickup truck pushes and pulls snow out of property corners to get the bulk of it into the center of the area. From that point, we push the snow to a designated zone. Being mindful of grass-areas beneath the snow saves the turf for landscaping in the spring. After all the snow is removed from roadways and parking spots, rock salt is spread. If the customer requires additional snow removal, such as shoveling and snow-blowing, those tasks are then completed and a substantial layer of ice-melt is applied to the sidewalks. Peoples’ safety is of utmost importance—all ice must be removed before the job is complete.
